Apply to become a Local 12 Legal Intern

AFGE LOCAL 12 LEGAL INTERNSHIP

The duties of the intern will include assisting in grievance preparation, arbitration representation, preparation of EEO complaints and any filings with the Federal Labor Relations Authority, Merit System Protection Board, and the EEOC.  There is also an opportunity for experience in the field of labor contract negotiating.  In addition, the intern may be called upon to assist in lobbying the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. local congressional delegation to influence the passage of labor-friendly legislation.

The intern will contribute to our organization through legal research, preparing witnesses for arbitration, presenting a case before a neutral arbitrator, and writing a clear and concise post-hearing brief.  Interns may also prepare material for training presentations to be presented to union representatives.  The intern will not only have the opportunity to work directly with the clients of the Union but will also present issues against the opposing counsel of management.

In preparing for arbitration, the intern will prepare witnesses and explain to them what issues the Union will be advancing at the hearing. The intern will present an opening argument, conduct direct examination and cross-examination during the course of the hearing.

Finally, the intern will research and write a post-hearing brief for the above-mentioned arbitration. Through the use of transcribed testimony, documentary evidence, case law, statutory and regulatory law, and the collective bargaining agreement, the intern will prepare the brief by applying independent judgment relating to various important legal matters.

If you wish to submit a résumé and cover letter, please send it to the attention of:  Alex Bastani, President, AFGE Local 12, 200 Constitution Avenue, NW, N-1503, Washington, DC 20210
